Smoke Signals

How to Remove Smoky Odours from Your Carpets

Smoke odours can completely ruin your carpets and leave a horrible smell hanging in the room. Whether the odour stems from fire damage or burnt food a smoky odour can absolutely destroy the cleanliness of your home.

But there is one smoky odour which is diabolical above all the rest; a heinous odour which will stain your carpets forever, or so it seems. I’m talking, of course, about cigarette smoke. Cigarette smoke it will work its way throughout your home in no time at all, and before you know it you will feel like you are living in an ashtray, literally.

It’s no secret that once that smoky smell seeps into the fibres in your carpets it can be incr

edibly hard to get it out. However, it’s not impossible. So, he’s what you need to do if your carpets are saturated in a smoky smell.

Here’s what you need:

  • 1 x big box of baking soda
  • 1 x dried lavender
  • 1 x vacuum cleaner

Here’s how you do it:

The great news is that this method is generally safe for all carpet types, so you don’t have to worry about burning holes in your already smoky carpet.

First of all, sprinkle your big box of baking soda over the entire carpet. Ensure that you are thorough with your application to achieve the best results. If you would like the carpet to have a sweet, pleasant scent afterwards then we recommend you mix some lavender with the baking soda before you sprinkle it out over the carpet with the enthusiasm of a hyperactive flower girl at a wedding.

Next, play the waiting game. Leave the baking soda on the carpet overnight, or for at least five hours according to the carpet cleaning boffins, but overnight is probably the best option. The next morning, spring out of bed and run downstairs to vacuum your carpets. And voila, your carpets should be cigarette smoke free!

If the smell has not been removed from the carpets then you may have to repeat the process.

If the smell has not been removed after a couple of attempts then it is possible that the damage has gone beyond your traditional DIY fix-it-up and you may have to call in a professional carpet cleaning company to get the stink out of your carpets.
