10 Completely and Utterly Random Facts About Carpets

I can see you there twirling your cum laude moustache with the panache of a carpet cleaning professor. You may have degrees in carpet cleaning; you may have years of experience as a carpet cleaner, you may even be able to speak to carpets with the heartfelt understanding and gifted ability of a carpet whisperer. Uh-um….yes, it’s a real thing.

Perhaps you have read every book on carpet cleaning and perhaps you do “sandbag” your friends when they try to chat up young ladies with their juvenile carpet cleaning pick-up lines… Maybe you do cut them down every time with a, “Well, yes the Spanish carpet was resurrected after the Civil War, but it actually originated in the caves of Afghanistan,” and watch is delight as they turn bright red and the young lady they were flirting with glides gracefully into your arms, because you have the knowledge of a carpet cleaning God!

Maybe you can pull off all of these things, but here are 10 completely random facts about carpets which I’m willing to bet that you don’t even know, smarty-pants!

Random Fact No.1:

The oldest carpet in the world is over 2000 years old. It is known as the Pazyryk carpet and in was found in a Scythian tomb in Siberia in 1940. 

Random Fact No.2:

The figurative phrase “to sweep under the carpet” was first recorded in 1963 which means the phrase celebrated its fiftieth birthday last year!

Random Fact No.3:

The Swastika was traditionally a sign of good fortune (until the Nazi’s butchered it) and it is not uncommon for it to be found on carpets from India, America, China and Europe.

Random Fact No.4:

People shed their skin. Yes, I know you know that one. But did you know that each person sheds approximately 1.5 million skin flakes in an hour. These skin flakes then provide a delicious meal for dust mites and other nasty little critters that live in your carpets.

Random Fact No.5:

When the vacuum cleaner was first invented it was extremely difficult to sell because people couldn’t believe, and were insulted by the suggestion that, there was that much dirt in their carpets.

Random Fact No.6:

We know the red carpet as a pathway for the movie stars, political leaders and royalty, but where did it come from? The earliest record of the red carpet was when was laid out for Agamemnon in 453 B.C.  

Random Fact No.7:

If you’re installing new carpets you should be aware that new carpets can emit harmful chemicals. Ask retailers about using a carpet adhesive with lower emissions or air out the carpet before installation.

Random Fact No.8:

Kawasaki Syndrome is an illness which is believed to be linked to chemicals in carpet cleaning products. It is believed that this was the cause of John Travolta and Kelly Preston’s son’s death, but there has been no substantial evidence to support this claim.

Random Fact No.9:

A study conducted at Anderson Labs reported that mice have dropped dead after inhaling carpet fumes.

Random Fact No.10:

A “carpet bagger” is a derogatory term for Northerners who took advantage of the South’s defeat in the American Civil War both politically and economically. The name derives from the travel bag which was made from carpet which they carried.
